The Rapid Rafter Pro: Why We Built an Aluminum Rapid Rafter

When we launched the original Rapid Rafter, the response from professional framers was immediate and enthusiastic — and immediately followed by a question: "When are you making this in metal?"

Fair point. The original Rapid Rafter is built from a high-impact polymer that's accurate, lightweight, and plenty durable for most use. But professional framing crews have specific demands that polymer can't fully meet. They need a tool that survives getting dropped off a roof plate. They need edges that hold up against saw base plates when the square doubles as a cut guide. They want something that feels like the metal squares they've carried for decades.

So we built it. The Rapid Rafter Pro is CNC-machined from aluminum, and it's the version that professional framers have been asking for since day one.

What Pros Actually Told Us

Before we started tooling, we spent time with framing crews on active jobsites — watching how they used the original Rapid Rafter, listening to what they loved, and documenting every complaint.

Here's what we heard most:

"I love the double-sided marking, but I'm afraid I'll break it." This was the most common concern. Professional framers aren't gentle with their tools. Squares get stepped on, dropped from second-story plates, run over by forklifts, and generally subjected to conditions that would destroy most consumer products. "I use my rafter square as a saw guide. I need metal for that." This is the big one. A huge percentage of circular saw crosscuts on a framing job are guided by pressing the saw base plate against the edge of a rafter square. "Can I stick a torpedo level to it?" Magnetic torpedo levels are a staple on framing jobs. Carpenters were attaching them to their metal rafter squares for plumb checks and wanted the same capability with the Rapid Rafter.

What We Changed

Material: 6061 Aluminum

We went with 6061-T6 aluminum — the same alloy used in aircraft structures, bicycle frames, and high-end rafter squares. It's strong enough to survive anything a jobsite throws at it, light enough that it doesn't feel like carrying a brick, and corrosion-resistant enough to handle rain, sweat, and the occasional swim in a puddle of concrete sealer.

Edges: CNC-Machined

The marking edges on the Rapid Rafter Pro are CNC-machined, not molded or stamped. This means tighter tolerances on the angle markings and a smoother edge surface for cleaner pencil lines. The marking faces are laser-engraved with the same degree scales and rafter tables as the original, but the engravings are permanent — no risk of wearing off with heavy use.

Hinge: Stainless Steel

The hinge mechanism — which is the engineering heart of the Rapid Rafter — uses stainless steel hardware in the Rapid Rafter Pro. It's the same open-and-straddle mechanism as the original, but built to handle the higher stresses that come with a heavier tool being used more aggressively.

Magnetic Compatibility

The Rapid Rafter Pro works with magnetic torpedo levels. Place a magnetic level on the face of the Rapid Rafter and it stays put — useful for checking plumb cuts on rafter tails and verifying angles without holding two tools simultaneously.

What We Didn't Change

The whole point of the Rapid Rafter is the patented double-sided design. That doesn't change. The Rapid Rafter Pro opens to straddle a board and marks both faces simultaneously, same as the original. The pitch markings, the common rafter scales, the hinge-and-straddle operation — all identical.

The Weight Question

"Is it heavier?" Yes. Aluminum is denser than polymer, and the Rapid Rafter Pro weighs more than the original. You'll notice the difference when you pick it up. What you won't notice is the difference in your tool belt — we're talking ounces, not pounds. And most framers we've talked to prefer the additional weight. It feels more substantial in the hand, it's less likely to blow off a plate in the wind (yes, this is a real problem with lightweight tools on a roof), and it has the heft that experienced carpenters associate with quality.

If weight is a priority — say you're carrying it in a saddle bag on a bicycle to a job, or you're doing overhead marking and every ounce matters — the original polymer Rapid Rafter is still the lightest double-sided square on the market. The two versions aren't competing with each other. They're serving different preferences.
